Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Wal

This title is on the Texas Library Associations Lariat List of recommended Adult Fiction for 2010. I thought it sounded interesting -- half novel, half biography. So we shall see how I feel at the end of the week. Hopefully there will be no head injuries this time.

Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Wal

Week 1 -- Game Change

Ok, so I have to confess I did not finish my book -- but only because I got a concussion this week. I did manage to finish all but 60 pages of this 400+ page book.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Virtually everything in it I take with a grain of salt. Mostly because I wonder how the authors got such exact quotes about such shocking stuff and who they got it from. Even more because the people speaking about it had to be very close insiders, loyalists to the canidate who suddenly changed their stripes and exposed their friends and collegues. Just doesn't make sense.

That being said, it is a slow but interesting read. Parts of it were quite boring but others were page turners. Some of it was just sickening -- such as diggs at John McCain's wife having a boyfriend, Elizabeth Edwards being a shrew dying of cancer etc. I mean, why did that need to be in there?

Would I read it again, probably not. Am I glad I read it? No.

Oh, well, on to week 2.

Week One -- Politics As Usual??

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin.

My first choice. Supposedly this book is scandelous and challenges the political status quo. Well, then line me up! Looks like a good read to me. Lets see what I think on May 2, 2010.

The Quest Begins

Welcome to Mommy Librarian! I wanted to call this blog something snazzy like 52 books in 52 weeks or the even jazzier book goals but then I started to snooze myself. Anyways, here I am.

I am indeed a librarian but I am first a mommy. As a mommy I find myself with little time for enjoyment. Things like going to Barnes and Noble and Half Price books are less and less likely right now with a sqirmy toddler. This is a shame since I love reading and make my living off of reading and other people wanting/needing to read. Most librarians actually don't get to read books all day -- oh we still read, but it is usually something professional like a journal, book review or quick research for a patron. After a long day of quick reads I find myself not in the mood to read more.

Lately I find myself bored. Bored with book reviews and news articles. Bored with TV. Just mentally bored. The kind of bored that comes from not reading a good book in a long time. Those of you who read know what I am talking about.

Now as a librarian and as a mother who wants her child to be well rounded I have to break this cycle. So I have a plan, a goal if you will. I am going to read one book a week for the next 52 weeks beginning Sunday April 25, 2010. I will journal my reviews here and challenge others to join me on my quest.

Be advised, I will be reading books that I find interesting. I may not like the book when I am done but I was interested in it at some point. Some of you will disagree with my choices and my opinions. That is fine. Some of you may refuse to read what I read and that is fine too. Read what you want to read. Let everyone know why you did or did not like it. The point it to read. Expand your mind. Challenge yourself! Lets see what we discover!
